The Creator of Fire Tonic, Mark Drill

In this podcast, I chat with the founder of Hilbilby Foods and co-creator of Fire Tonic, Mark Drill

The Carb-Appropriate Podcast Ep.30

This episode of the Carb-Appropriate podcast features Mark Drill, the founder of Hilbilby Foods, makers of the world-famous Fire Tonic®. I have to say that I hadn’t counted on enjoying this cast as much as I did! Of course, I wanted to chat with Mark about his experiences in the natural health and wholefoods world, and I knew that my listeners and students would get a lot out of it… But I hadn’t counted on the the thoroughly enjoyable tangents we explored and rabbit-holes we went down, discussing politics, absolutism, cancel culture, faux-outrage and much more!

Some of the key points of discussion were:

  • How the health journey of Mark’s family led to the creation of Hilbilby Foods and Fire Tonic
  • Why Fire Tonic was quickly embraced by foodies, health nuts, surfers, and MMA fighters alike
  • Some of the benefits of Fire Tonic

We also discussed in depth the rebranding of Fire Tonic from “Traditional Gypsy Remedy” to (the far more appropriate) “Traditional Folk Remedy”…

A bit of background…

A while back I contacted Mark and the team about their use of the byline “Traditional Gypsy Remedy” and the use of Romani stereotypes in their advertising. Quite frankly, I was blown away by the way that they listened, appreciated the issue, and most importantly, changed their brand. As anyone in business knows, relabelling and shifting brand-identity and bylines can be a costly exercise, but as Mark said in this cast, despite the fact that no offence was intended; “We don’t want our product of success to be built upon the oppression or offence of others”.

[The general discussion about the use of Gypsy and subsequent discussion about outrage and cancel culture starts ~20min in]
