A great way to get increased nutrient content into your diet is to eat a greater variety of coloured vegetables, fruits and berries. The colours come from compounds that are potent antioxidants (such as the anthocyanins) which help to reduce the breakdown of cells and tissue due to excess inflammation and oxidation. This inflammation and oxidation, if not properly dealt with by the body, is associated with weight gain, premature ageing and a host of lifestyle disorders ranging from heart disease to diabetes, cancer and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease. Increasing the intake of berries and tropical fruit (like pineapple, paw-paw and mango) has also been shown to improve blood sugar regulation!
Try to have at least three assorted colours from vegetables, fruit and berries.
