Sweet potatoes and yams are very low in allergens and are nutritionally robust, containing ‘coloured’ compounds that are highly anti-oxidative. As a final bonus, kumara (sweet potato) can be eaten raw or only partially cooked, thereby offering a terrific addition to salads and less required preparation time! Many people find that they experience less bloating, digestive issues and intolerance related symptoms when eating tuber-like kumara and yams, compared to potato and grains. If you need carbohydrate fuel, use kumara and yams as your first choices.
