Cliff’s 101 Tips for Health: Cut the Lattes!

Try decaf or tea and ditch the milky coffees if you’re at a weight-loss plateau

Both coffee and dairy are typically fine for most people. Coffee intake is associated with reduced rates of diabetes,59-62 cardiovascular disease,63 liver disease,64 gallstone risk,65 cognitive-decline, dementia,66 and depression.67

But some people are already stressed out, overworked, and under-slept. If that sounds like you, the caffeine in coffee will not be helping you, especially if you over-imbibe!

The extra calories from the milk in coffee, especially those drinking a lot, can also derail weight loss efforts. I have seen in clinical practice, that for some people, the simple act of reducing coffee intake, and especially that of milk-based coffee drinks, can have a profound effect.

So, if you tolerate coffee well, then continue to drink it but try having just black coffees, or coffee with just a dash of milk (like a long macchiato). And, if you’re not sleeping well or are becoming jittery or anxious from your usual coffee intake, try tea, or stick to decaf, which offers many of the health benefits of regular coffee.

If you feel that dairy isn’t right for you, avoid it for four weeks and see if you feel any better
